Dear Spiritual Seeker,
I wonder what it is about violets that brings me such delight. Is it their hidden nature, growing as they do in unexpected places? Is it their color? Is it the reminder that spring is underway, with its hope for new life?
My mother tells me that when I was first toddling around the house, I had this stubborn habit of “picking” her African violets (roots and all). Perhaps I tried to make this up to her, in my school days, when I would gather wild violets to give her on Mother’s Day, just as she had done for her own mother a generation before.
When Jesus looked at the beauty of wildflowers, he marveled at the generous love of God. If the Creator cared so much for such fragile things, he reasoned, would not God care for us all the more? (See Matthew 6:25-34 and Luke 12:22-34.)
Picking violets without disturbing their roots is a skill I mastered long ago, but I am still learning about Christian trust and the ways of the Spirit. It is my hope that this website will be a quiet, sacred space in which we can ponder the mystery of God and the spiritual journey together.
